The Jeanie Johnston ChronicleLaunch Day 2 - Tuesday 19th April, 2000 |
![]() |
Tuesday dawned wet, windy and wintry, not a good day to be attempting such a delicate task as launching the Jeanie. But, shortly after lunch-time, the specially built 72 wheeled platform inched towards the sea, carrying the hull of the Jeanie Johnston towards her temporary home on the barge. It took over 4 hours to move her the 20 metres to her new home, and when she was rolled onto it, welding began afresh to secure the platform onto the barge for floating to Fenit. In the village, many sight-seers had once again gathered, but because of the weather the crowd was smaller and there was rather a sense of anti-climax when it became obvious that again the ship would not move from Blennerville today, owing to the gale force winds and stormy conditions. It is now planned to get her away on the 6am high tide tomorrow morning. In the pubs, music and craic were again being enjoyed, but in a more subdued manner than yesterday, due to the smaller turnout. At least the Guinness didn't run out! |

With the Jeanie moved onto the barge, her empty shed looks forlorn. Plans are afoot to construct a cross-section of a famine ship here to be used as a museum whilst the Jeanie is away on her maiden voyage. | ![]() |
